Fitness Economy – The fastest growing economy in the world

We normally tend to associate the word economy with nations. So, it is indeed a little oblique to think about fitness as an economy. But, pause for a moment, and think with an open mind. The fastest growing economy in the world isn’t really a nation, but it is an idea – the idea of Fitness.

Look at the world around. People are trying hard to keep their bodies and mind fit. They are working out. They are playing. They are running. They are watching what they eat. They are seeking gadgets which help them track their work rate. They are consulting fitness trainer, yoga gurus, running coaches & all other sort of experts. They are wearing sports shoes. They are wearing dri-fits and lycras. More than ever before!

Isn’t this true? Aren’t we experiencing a tectonic shift in mindset towards sports and fitness – in a positive way, of course?

What does all of this indicate? DEMAND. A massive pull for everything that is Fitness. So, isn’t Fitness Economy a real thing?

Numerically inclined people would say, ‘where is the data to support this?’ Honestly, with a little bit of effort one can easily put together numerous charts to show how consumption towards fitness is shooting through the roof. Let us park that for another day.

Another question would be why is this happening and why now?

At the very basic level, it is because people aren’t putting their bodies at as much work as it needs to. Thanks to the service-oriented economy and advancement in technology, calories are now burnt only with the brain. People aren’t hitting outdoors enough. People aren’t walking enough. Because, there is no need to.

Physical activities are no longer a part of the routine life of a large segment of people. This segment, then, must specifically create opportunities to indulge in physical activities to address the deficit. Furthermore, jobs are more stressful than ever, thanks to technology, traffic, pollution and more such ‘evil’ things. This is driving people to specifically address the mental health by indulging in yoga, meditation etc.

Put all the above together and we have an excellent prognosis for anything related to fitness. Fitness Economy, therefore, is a real thing and it is likely to remain so for a long time.

What do you think?
