Predict your race time: The ultimate tool for hitting your PR/PB

For most runners, the chase for a Personal Record (PR) or Personal Best (PB) is a never-ending journey. These milestones signify improvement and validate months of hard work. The typical cycle begins with setting a goal, followed by weeks or months of disciplined training, and culminates in a race. Then, it starts all over again!

But a nagging question plagues almost every runner during this process: “Am I ready to hit my target time?”

Let’s take the example of Jay, a determined runner training for a 3-hour 15-minute marathon. This time goal also happens to be his Boston Marathon qualifying standard—famously and fearfully known as the BQ.

How does it work?

The Race Equivalence Calculator is built on the Riegel Formula, a mathematical equation developed by American researcher Peter Riegel. This formula predicts race times for a specific distance based on your performance at another distance. For example, if you recently ran a half marathon, you can use the Riegel Formula to estimate your marathon finish time.
